Fantastic one off volunteering opportunity to help build capacity of small ngo.  Based in Uganda with our partner organisation Global Village Network placement is to assist in establishing a volunteer scheme and will include some English teaching.  Minimum 2 months.  Might suit friends/couple.  Must leave before August 2010. 1/2 donation of normal inclusive trip required.  End date when filled.

Teaching English

Volunteers generally teach English at primary school in Uchira. All primary education in Tanzania is conducted in Swahili and then there is a large jump and all secondary education is taught in English so there is a real need for building the capacity of school children before making the transition. We have a number of ‘lesson-plans’ and resources. We also offer very popular English evening classes in the Village. This is the area most of our volunteers are involved in and provides the possibility for those volunteers without a specialized skill to still be of great assistance to the village.

Sustainable agriculture and cultural tourism

Village-to-Village has constructed a centre for volunteers and cultural tourism centre on a plot of land in Uchira. This plot is in the early development and hopes to become a space where agricultural and irrigation techniques can be tried and tested. Volunteers are helping to develop the site and cultural tourism activities. A great place for those who like getting their hands dirty to get involved!

Supporting HIV/AIDS Activities

In conjunction with Bradford University Centre for International Development, we work with a group of people living with HIV/AIDS in the village of Hedaru and in Uchira on research and capacity-building. Such groups also provide support for local orphans. Volunteers have the opportunity to provide assistance to this work. This could be through undertaking research projects or supporting the straight talk groups in schools.

Special Volunteer Opportunities

As a growing organization there are a number of areas where volunteers with specific skills may be useful. For up to date details of special skills we are looking for please see the website. For example, we are currently looking for individuals with food preparation experience to improve the culinary skills of our local staff.

What will volunteers gain from this project?

Village-to-Village volunteers have the opportunity to work in an informal and relaxed environment on this project. While volunteers are expected to work hard, they also have a good time! There is flexibility to work on different aspects of the project, plus the chance to make weekend trips away if volunteers so wish. Working with a team is important, and living in another culture provides an excellent opportunity for personal development. Village-to-Village is a small charity, and so the feeling of ‘giving something back’ is on a very personal level.

What do the projects and people gain from our visit?

Village-to-Village already has an established relationship with many of the residents of these communities. By working directly with local people, we hope to share ideas and provide opportunities. Our goal is to promote a type of community based development that is both sustainable and progressive. This project will provide both short-term solutions in the form of teaching placements, while the agriculture project is addressing the long-term needs of people in the area.
